Singapore International Film Festival: Lao Wai

by saynotospandex

Together with my partner in crime M, we caught our first film for this year’s Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF) at Shaw Lido.

Named “Lao Wai / 老外”, the film explores how the relationship between a French living in Shanghai and a teacher from Wuhan who met in a CD shop. This white man meets Asian girl theme is probably done to death but I really liked how it came across way more genuine than I had expected. Brings back to mind what AG had said “it’s not about the color but the type of man you’re with” when I’d asked her about her relationship with her German fiance.

Lao Wai was nominated for Best Film at 2011’s Silver Screen Awards and features the charming Gauthier Roubichou.
